A Touch of Wuthering Heights in The Peak District- 17th Sept 2009
A South Yorkshire man has scooped top prize in Friends of the Peak District1’s photo competition this year.

Mark Tierney2 was born in Doncaster and brought up in Rotherham. He was recently made redundant from the engineering firm where he has worked for 24 years and is now setting up his own business – as a professional photographer.

“The timing of this is great. It’s a real boost to my new business,” he says.

Mark’s stunning photograph is called “Curbar Bride.” It shows his wife Nicky standing on Curbar Edge staring into the distance and wearing a white wedding dress.

The countryside campaigners’ annual competition was judged by a panel of distinguished professional photographers: Paul Hill, Karen Frenkel and Mike Williams. They said the striking black and white photograph had “a touch of Heathcliff about it, and a gothic, surreal quality.”

There were over 200 entries in the competition, which was run in conjunction with CPRE South Yorkshire – and Mark won first and joint second place in the South Yorkshire category too. He also had two more pictures commended, including “Flower Girl” showing his five year old daughter at Throapham, Rotherham.

School girl Rebecca Walton (15 - pictured, right) won the under-18s category with her lively photograph of three pals jumping in the sunshine at Parsonage Farm. Rebecca, from Deepcar, took the photo on her mobile phone. She was delighted to win a year’s free supply of ice cream from local Peak District firm Bradwell’s Dairy Ice Cream.

Paul Hill and the judges were impressed by the range and quality of entries. They encouraged potential photographers to take unusual pictures and to “think outside the box.”

1p per pot for Bluebell Wood!- 30th July 2009
Bradwell’s Dairy Ice Cream is thrilled to announce their support for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice

Jane Bownes, managing director at Bradwell’s Dairy Ice Cream has been searching for a Sheffield-based charity to champion for a year. Jane’s aim was simple- to be associated with a charity which helps local families enjoy fun and laughter together despite the uncertainty of illness.

Jane commented “Ice cream has long been established as a traditional treat enjoyed by all the family. Ice cream is synonymous with shared family fun - days out, trips to the seaside and family holidays which evoke happy memories in all us. If we can help put a smile on children’s faces and help families enjoy fun together, as well as raising awareness and generating vital funds, then we will have made a big difference and achieved what we set out to do.”

She continued “It was quite obvious from our visits that the team are passionate and work tirelessly to help families and their siblings live with fun, love and laughter under often difficult circumstances. Immediately upon visiting Bluebell Wood I could see it was a safe, caring, loving and above all a happy place to be.”

Sarah Champion, Chief Executive of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice added “It’s fantastic that Bradwell’s have chosen to support us this year. Bluebell Wood provides support to children with life limiting conditions. Our hospice is a relaxed and happy place where families can take a break, have fun and get a helping hand with the care they need. We also assist many children and their families across the region in their own homes. It costs £2.5 million a year to provide this vital help to families, and with no statutory funding, adoptions like this one, and public support, are crucial to our success.”

To celebrate their support for Bluebell Wood, Bradwell’s are launching their “pots of fun”. Look out for on-pack stickers on their take-home tubs. For every 500ml luxury ice cream and 1 litre classic ice cream take-home tubs sold, Bradwell’s will proudly donate 1p per pot to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The ice cream is available in all good retailers, supermarkets, cafes and delis across South Yorkshire & Derbyshire.

Bradwell’s Reveals New Look - 16th February 2009
After months or development in February 2009, we are thrilled to unveil our ‘new look’ Bradwells logo. We have been proudly producing dairy ice cream and serving our local customers in Derbyshire, Sheffield and Yorkshire for well over 100 years. With such a unique heritage we wanted our logo to reflect our traditional values made famous by Hannah. We have created a new logo incorporating the iconic millstones stones and our beautiful countryside with new strapline ‘The Peak of Excellence’, which is synonymous with Derbyshire’. Using the sumptuous image of our Cherry Bakewell dairy ice cream and retaining the classic oval with iconic Bradwell’s ‘blue’, we feel we have refreshed, yet maintained the essence of our much-loved brand. We hope you agree?

Our Classic Collection has a face lift too. We have introduced a new contemporary oval take home tub, with local Derbyshire images which distinguish each flavour. We hope you agree that when you see these images and tubs in the freezers, in all good local supermarkets, deli’s and shops, you be confidently buy our ice cream, knowing that you are supporting your local producer. Can you guess where the images are?

Tesco Scoops Up Our Luxury Ice Cream - 16th February 2009
We are delighted to announce that more than 60 Tesco stores across Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Licolnshire & the Midlands, will be stocking our new ‘take home’ Platinum Dairy Ice Cream Collection from the beginning of March 2009, which complements the existing Classic Collection they already stock.

Lemon“This is really exciting news for us,” says Jane. “We have worked so hard, developing, sampling and blind testing our recipes with our customers. Our final selection reflects what our customers have asked for and what they would like to be able to enjoy at home. Our findings mirror the phenominal sales of our Platinum cornets through our carts at The Trafford Centre, so we feel confident that we are on to a winner with this much tested, ‘take home’ tub collection.” The Platinum Collection tubs offer luxuriously indulgent, sophisticated butter-rich dairy ice cream flavours for the discerning ice cream lover to enjoy and share at home. We have a very loyal customer base who like to support their local producers.

Ella’s Lift Mouth-Watering Ice Cream Fundraiser
We are delighted to support Bethany School, Netherthorpe in Sheffield, who are raising funds for Ella’s lift. Ella is five years old and has Spina Bifida. Ella’s condition means that she will use a wheelchair throughout her life. A new ‘through the floor’ lift is essential for Ella to reach the school hall, so she can be fully integrated and help her move more independently. Bradwell’s have just agreed to give ice cream for their production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in March to raise funds. Bethany School is owned and operated by Christian Family Schools Ltd, a non-profit making company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.

Jane … The Simon Cowell of Ice Cream!
Jane had the honour of being a judge at the annual Ice Cream Alliance show in Harrogate and thoroughly enjoyed tasting the many entries of ice cream. Up to 60 flavours can be tasted in one morning. Not for the faint hearted!!

Student Reveals Bradwell’s Body Art
A few years ago we were approached by the Sheffield Art School who wanted to recreate Bradwells flavours in the shape of body art. One student painted her body with our logo as a t shirt and others depicted flavours such as cappuccino, raspberry ripple and strawberry. They looked absolutely fantastic.

A Long Lasting Alliance
Bradwells Ice Cream has been members of the Ice Cream Alliance for 59 years and benefit from their expert up to the minute technical and legal support, industry news and new innovations. We are also members of the Chamber of Commerce and The Federation of Small Businesses.

Local Producer Earns Global Standard
During 2007 Bradwells decided to work towards the BRC accreditation. This Global Standard for Food Safety provides a single standard and protocol world wide that measures a level of competence in food safety and quality systems for manufacturers. We were audited to this very high and rigorous standard and are please to announce that we achieved full accreditation with a grade A. This award ensures that our standards are of such a high standard that for example all major supermarkets accept this global audit.

Proudly Supporting Our Community
  • We have recently been approached by a local student who is completing a thesis on manufacturing/ business and we are working closely with him to help him achieve this.
  • A local school visited us recently with a view to installing an ice cream tuck shop within their school.  They were interested in the business side of this enterprise and we gave help and advice in making this work.
  • Jane has given many talks on Bradwell’s ice cream to groups within the area, the most recent being to a group of local fund raisers who thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the tasting session!!
